Pruning Programs

Our creativity program allows us to prune an existing program and conserve its finite attention to mutate a new program that hasn’t existed.

Other animals cannot do this.

They cannot prune existing programs to create new ones.

We can. We do this via understanding.

Every new understanding necessarily comes with a new problem.

The most focused problem triggers the mutation of a new program; the least focused problem enables the pruning of the old.

One cannot happen without the other. This is what understanding is.

Without this dual mechanism — pruning and mutation — there is no learning, no understanding.

Only adaptations via the same attentional principles, but without the distinct explanatory process that separates creativity apart from mindless adaptations.
